Abigail sat up.

More accurately, she tried.

Something was over her, warm and soft. And moving. She thrashed, shoved at whatever it was, and rolled away from…wherever it was she had been. She got tangled up in fabric and wound up making it worse as she tried to free herself.

Someone laughed. It was deep, dark, and resonant.

It made her cheeks instantly feel as though they were on fire. Sitting up, she swept her hair out of her face and found herself sitting in the grass by a pond.

A pond she recognized.

She groaned in dismay.

Valroy, who was lying on a bedroll over the grass, laughed louder, revealing those sharp eyeteeth. “I knew it! Oh, how beautiful.”

Her hand flew to her throat, and she winced in pain. It was a deep bruise, but…no wound. She should have gashes from where he had buried those teeth into her neck, but she felt none. More magic, she assumed.

“I told you, you would live.” He stretched out like a great cat, reaching his arms up over his head. He folded his arms beneath his head and smiled at her once more, precisely like a cat that was far too pleased with himself. “Did you not believe me?”

“I—” She wasn’t wearing the same clothes as before. Trousers, yes. But they were a dark gray that was nearly black. Her cotton shirt was a deep scarlet. My face likely matches it. “You undressed me.”

“I’ve seen you—wait. That is what you’re upset with me about?” He quirked an eyebrow. “That after you fainted from the poison that I saved you from, you’re annoyed that I took you out of your soaked clothing and gave you something new to wear?” He shook his head and looked up at the stars overhead. “Humans.”

“I’m angry at you for a great deal of things. It needn’t start and end with your cavalier approach to personal privacy.” Searching around on the grass beside her, she found a bodice tangled up in the fabric of the blanket she had tripped over. The fabric matched her trousers. She quickly put it on and began lacing it up.

“Do you even remember what happened this morning?” Another arched eyebrow.

“Yes. Yes, I do.” Her face felt like the poison was at work again, making her feel on fire. “And I would like not to speak of it. You needn’t remind me.”

“Why not?” He rolled onto his side to face her. Gods, he was so long. So perfect. The way the muscles of his abdomen disappeared into the pants that were entirely too tight made her want to—

No, no, no!

“You’re mad at me, aren’t you?”

“No.” She searched for her shoes. She found them—well, a pair anyway, they weren’t the same—sitting nearby. “Well, yes. I’m furious with you about a great many things. But not—not about that.” She paused. “About what we did.”

“We?”

After a pause and a cringe, she answered. “We.” She focused on tying the laces of the boots. “The poison was at work, yes, but…I was hardly an unwilling participant. I was inebriated, but you—” She bit back her shame and her embarrassment.
